Park(ing) Day on Houston Street

On September 20, 2024 metered parking spaces around the world will be transformed into an oasis of activation and innovation as citizens, small businesses, nonprofits, and local government celebrate international Park(ing) Day.

Park(ing) Day began in 2005 when a San Francisco-based art studio dedicated to environmental projects set up a park for two hours in a metered space. Since then, the event has spread, with temporary parks popping up in 162 cities and 35 countries, evolving into the global event designated as the day for creating temporary green space.

This year, Centro, in collaboration with the 80I20 Foundation, will activate the Houston Street corridor. Architects, creatives, designers, students, small business, and neighbors are encouraged to sign up to sponsor a space. A sponsor is a community group, organization, small business, or activator that “sponsors” a parking spot or streetscape and is responsible for creating/activating a small park or experience within the space.

Individuals interested in participating can fill out a form providing a basic concept or outline of their planned activation of the 10×20 space. Whether it’s a temporary green space, a place for people to sit, create, or play, all ideas are welcome!
